Bochum: Guide

Bochum es una ciudad Alemania|alemania en el estado Renania del Norte-Westfalia, situada en la parte central de la cuenca del Ruhr entre las ciudades de Essen y Dortmund.

La ciudad cuenta con 377,393 habitantes (a 30 de abril de 2006) y es la décimosexta ciudad más grande de Alemania según su número de habitantes, y con un área de 145.45 km² la cuadragésimoprimera en extensión.

Historia

A pesar de que Bochum fue establecida en el siglo XVI, el pueblo carecía de importancia hasta el siglo XIX, cuando la industria carbonífera y de acero emergieron en la región del Ruhr, lo que causó un crecimiento importante en la región. La población de Bochum incrementó diez veces entre 1850 y 1890.

Entre 1960 y 2001, todas las minas fueron cerradas. Otras industrias, como la construcción de carros, compensaron la pérdida de empleos. En 1965 se abrió la Universidad Ruhr de Bochum, la primera universidad en la región del Ruhr y la primera nueva fundación desde la Segunda Guerra Mundial.

El club de fútbol, VfL Bochum, relegada a la segunda Bundesliga en 2005, está en una feroz competencia con los equipos vecinos Borussia Dortmund y FC Schalke 04 de Gelsenkirchen. Serán promovidos a la Primera División (primer Bundesliga) para la siguiente temporada de 2006/2007.

Han sobrevivido dos castillos de la Edad Media en los bancos del norte del río Ruhr. En la ciudad también puede encontrarse el famoso Museo Alemán de Minería, el musical Starlight Express (desde 1988) y el Museo de Trenes en Dahlhausen.

Transporte

Bochum está unida a la red de autopistas (A 40 y Bundesautobahn 43|A 43. Tiene también una estación de tren situada en la línea que corre desde Duisburg hasta Dortmund, uniendo a la ciudad con la red de larga distancia de la Deutsche Bahn, así como a la red de trenes suburbanos S-Bahn de la zona del Rin-Ruhr. El servicio local de trenes está orquestado por la BOGESTRA, un joint venture entre las ciudades de Bochum y Gelsenkirchen. Hay una línea subterránea del tren ligero Stadtbahn que une a Bochum con Herne, y otras varias líneas de tranvía que unen a la ciudad con Gelsenkirchen y Witten. El transporte público es llevado a cabo de acuerdo a las regulaciones de la asociación de transportes VRR.
