Brunswick (en Hanóver la segunda ciudad más grande de la Baja Sajonia. Braunschweig es desde 1918 la residencia oficial de la casa noble de los Brunswick-Lüneburg.
Historia
Se desconoce la fecha y las circunstancias de la fundación de la ciudad. De acuerdo a una Leyenda, la primera ciudad fue fundada en el año 861 a.C.. La tradición dice que fue fundada por Bruno II, un conde sajón que murió antes de 1017. El nombre original de la ciudad, Brunswik, es una combinación del nombre de Bruno y wik que significa el lugar donde los mercaderes descansaban y guardaban su mercancía. El nombre de la ciudad indica, por lo tanto, un buen lugar para descansar porque se encuentra en un vado del río Oker. Otra explicación para el nombre de la ciudad es que proviene de Brand, o arder, indicando un lugar que se desarrolló después de que fuera limpiado por el fuego.
En el XIII se convirtió en miembro de la Liga hanseática.
La ciudad resultó gravemente dañada en el transcurso de la Segunda Guerra Mundial.

Medio ambiente
La Universidad Técnica de Brunswick estudia si edificios viejos pueden alcanzar el estándar actual a través de reformas, y así obtener un resultado medioambiental adecuado. Entre los proyectos se hallan el edificio nuevo del ayuntamiento de Brunswick y la iglesia evangélica en Berlin.
Por otra parte, la Unión Europea (UE) subvenciona con 3 millones de euros el proyecto NANOIMPRINT entre el Instituto Alemán de Investigación Agrícola (FAL) en Braunschweig. El proyecto busca obtener materias primas renovables a partir de desechos por medio de procesos biotecnológicos.
