Erlangen: Guide
Erlangen es una ciudad universitaria en Franconia Central, en el estado federado de Baviera, en el sur de Alemania. Tiene 102.000 habitantes y es la octava ciudad de Baviera. Las ciudades más cercanas son Fürth a 14 km al sur y Núremberg 16 km al sureste.
La importancia de la ciudad reside hoy tanto en su universidad y el hospital clínico como en las dependencias de la compañía electrónica Siemens. Es por ello, y debido en parte a la interacción de estos dos motores económicos de la ciudad, muy reconocida su fama de centro de excelencia médico-biotecnológica.
Erlangen está situada a orillas del río Regnitz y junto al Canal del Danubio y el Meno. Justo en la parte norte de la ciudad se funden el río Regnitz y el Schwabach.
Historia
Erlangen fue fundada en el año 1002 con el nombre de "villa erlangon". En 1374 empezó a acuñarse moneda. En 1528 ocurrió la Reforma protestante|Reforma.
En 1686 llegaron los primeros hugonotes que huían de los edictos franceses; fueron los que realmente crearon la ciudad, especialmente cuando en 1706 se quema en un incendio y es reconstruida. En 1743 se traslada a Erlangen la Universidad de Bayreuth, pasando a llamarse Friedrich-Alexander-Universität, siendo hoy en día la segunda universidad de Baviera.
En 1974 se superó la barrera de los 100.000 habitantes, por lo es considerada una de las grandes ciudades de Alemania.
Personajes célebres
El 16 de marzo de 1789 nació en Erlangen el físico Georg Simon Ohm, que da nombre a la unidad de resistencia eléctrica (ohmio).
