Capital de Mecklemburgo-Pomerania Occidental, situada a 80 kilómetros al Sur del Mar Báltico.

De su casco antiguo, destaca el palacio ducal, asentado en una isla del Lago de Schwerin y remodelado en el siglo XIX.
