Weimar es una ciudad de Bundesland de Turingia (Idioma alemán|alemán Thüringen). Su población actual es de 64.594 habitantes (31 de diciembre de 2005), lo cual la convierte en la cuarta ciudad más grande de Turingia, después de Erfurt, Gera y Jena. Además, es una de las pocas ciudades grandes de este estado, cuya población aumenta anualmente. El registro más antiguo de la ciudad data del año 899.
Weimar es uno de los lugares con mayor riqueza cultural de Europa, ya que fue hogar de grandes personajes como el pintor Lucas Cranach el Viejo, el reformador Martín Lutero, el compositor Johann Sebastian Bach, los escritores Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Friedrich Schiller y Christoph Martin Wieland, los filósofos Johann Gottfried von Herder, Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche y Arthur Schopenhauer, el músico Franz Liszt y los fundadores de la escuela de diseño, arte y arquitectura Escuela de la Bauhaus|Bauhaus. Ha sido un lugar de peregrinación para la intelectualidad alemana, desde que Goethe se trasladó por primera vez a la ciudad a finales del siglo XVIII. En la ciudad se pueden encontrar las tumbas de Goethe, Schiller, y Nietzsche, así como el Archivo de Goethe y Schiller, el Archivo Estatal de Turingia, el Archivo Musical de Turingia y la Biblioteca de Anna Amalia|Biblioteca de la princesa Anna Amalia.
Durante el periodo de la Historia de Alemania de 1919-1933 se habla de la República de Weimar, por la constitución de la República, que fue redactada en la ciudad, mientras que la capital, Berlin, con sus disturbios callejeros después de la revolución de 1918, fue considerada demasiado peligrosa para convocar a la Asamblea Nacional constituyente.
Weimar fue el centro del movimiento Escuela de la Bauhaus|Bauhaus y actualmente cuenta con diversas galerías de arte, museos, el Teatro Nacional Alemán, y dos institutos de educación superior: la Universidad Bauhaus y la Escuela Superior de Música Franz Liszt. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, hubo un campo de concentración al noroeste de la ciudad, en Campo de concentración de Buchenwald|Buchenwald, un pequeño bosque al que Goethe le gustaba frecuentar. Sin embargo, a diferencia de muchas otras ciudades alemanas, Weimar no sufrió demasiados daños durante esta guerra, por lo que su centro antiguo se conserva en su mayor parte.
La parte Weimar clásico|clásica de Weimar es considerada Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO desde 1998. Igualmente, la ciudad fue seleccionada capital europea de la cultura en 1999.
