Canterbury: Guide
Canterbury es una ciudad del sureste de Inglaterra, no lejos de Londres, sobre el río Stour, perteneciente al condado de Kent. Es famosa por su bella catedral. Tenía 42.258 habitantes en 2001. Es el principal centro religioso del Reino Unido, por ser la sede del arzobispo de Canterbury, líder espiritual de la Iglesia de Inglaterra (es, por tanto, el segundo líder cristiano más importante de Europa, tras el Papa de Roma). Desde 2003 ocupa el puesto Rowan Williams.
Poblada desde tiempos prehistóricos, Canterbury ya fue un centro administrativo romano. Con el fin de la dominación latina, la ciudad fue invadida por los jutos que asentaron allí el Reino de Kent. En 597, el misionero San Agustín de Canterbury|Agustín desembarcó en Canterbury con el objetivo de iniciar la conversión de los anglo-sajón|anglo-sajones. Desde entonces, la ciudad ha sido un centro de la religión cristiana, convirtiéndose rápidamente en la sede del arzobispo primado de Inglaterra. Fue un importante centro de peregrinaje durante la Edad Media, y se hizo célebre en la obra Los Cuentos de Canterbury de Geoffrey Chaucer.
