Reading: Guide
Reading es una ciudad y una unidad administrativa en el condado de Berkshire en Inglaterra, Reino Unido. Situada en la confluencia de los ríos Támesis y Kennet, la ciudad está a medio camino entre Londres y Oxford.
El distrito tiene una población de 144.000 habitantes. Reading es probablemente el centro de negocios más importante del sudeste de Inglaterra, a parte de Gran Londres. La mayoría de las compañías importantes de Gran Bretaña tienen su sede en la ciudad en la que también se encuentran numerosas multinacionales; aparte del Centro Europeo de Meteorología.
El centro de la ciudad está situado cerca de las confluencias del Támesis y el río Kennet lo que refleja la historia de la ciudad como puerto fluvial. Antes de la confluencia, el Kennet se extiende por una estrecha abertura para formar la planicie fluvial del Támesis. Reading está a 64 kilómetros al oeste del centro de Londres y a 40 kilómetros al sudeste de Oxford.
Historia
El asentamiento original fue fundado en el medieval.
A finales del siglo XVI, Reading era la mayor ciudad en el condado de Berkshire, con una población de 3.000 habitantes. La ciudad desempeñó un importante papel durante la guerra civil; cambió de manos numerosas veces. Fue también el lugar en el que se desarrollaron diversas batallas durante la revolución gloriosa de 1688.
En 1801, la población era de 9.400 personas. Durante el siglo XIX Reading se desarrolló como un importante centro manufacturero. Desde 1832 la ciudad tiene dos miembros que le representan en el parlamento. El consejo de la ciudad se introdujo en el año 1839.
El ferrocarril llegó a Reading en 1841. En 1851 la población era ya de 21.500 personas. El rango de distrito del condado le fue concedido en 1887. A principios del siglo XX, Reading contaba con 59.000 habitantes. La ciudad se hizo famosa por su cerveza y por sus galletas. A pesar de ser la mayor ciudad de Bershire durante siglos, Reading tuvo que esperar hasta 1974 para ser declarada oficialmente la capital de Berkshire.
En los últimos años, el lugar ha ganado notoriedad mundial por albergar uno de los festivales musicales anuales más importantes del mundo, el Reading Festival, donde han participado varias bandas famosas e independientes del Reino Unido y Estados Unidos.
