Capital del condado de Halland (Suecia).
Superficie: 1018 km²
Población: 85.200 habitantes (2005).
Limita: al Norte con el municipio de Falkenberg, al Noreste con el municipio de Hylte, al Este con el condado de Kronoberg, al Sur con el municipio de Laholm y al Oeste con el estrecho de Kattegat.
Construida en la temprana Edad Media, en torno a los años 1000 ó 1100. El nombre de Halmstad es mencionado en el jordebok de Valdemar II de Dinamarca, en 1231, como casa del rey. El comandante sueco Engelbrekt y sus tropas quemaron la ciudad en 1430. En 1563, al comienzo de la Guerra del Norte de los Siete Años, la ciudad fue asediada. En 1619 la ciudad fue incendiada, con la excepción de edificios de piedra y la iglesia.
